Bike Team

The department formed the EMS Bike Unit during 2002 with donations from the Haverford Township Police Department. We provide advanced and basic life support utilizing mountain bikes carrying our medical equipment. A fully equipped paramedic vehicle also supports the bike team to continue the advanced life support treatment.

Why medics on bikes?
We saw the need at large gatherings to bring medical care to our residents as quickly and effectively as possible. We all know the limitations of getting through traffic with our vehicle, finding the person needing assistance, and then getting our equipment and personnel to the patient. These are concerns for street festivals, parades, walk-a-thons, running events, and many other activities. It has always been very important to provide early defibrillation and swift emergency medical pre-hospital care. Placing a team of paramedics on bikes with their equipment has allowed us to do that in crowded and unusual locations.
